Creating & configuring a content upgrade popup

Before proceeding, ensure your content upgrade is both engaging and of high quality, as this impacts user perception and subsequent conversion rates significantly.

Let’s begin. For demonstration purposes, we’ll use our standard website, http://www.asiteaboutemojis.com, and an SEO checklist as our content upgrade. Locate the Sumo badge on your website’s top right corner and log in, or click on “My Tools” if already logged in.

Once inside the app, access the left sidebar and click on “Forms” ⇒ “List Builder”. On the left side of the screen, you’ll find the sidebar enabling form configuration. Opt for “Collect Emails” as your goal. Now, select the “Form Type.” Despite the temptation to choose “Cart Casio,” opt for either “Popup” or “Welcome Mat” for optimal conversion rates, based on our experience. Design your popup. Free Sumo accounts offer default appearance only, whereas paid accounts provide additional customization options.

For now, let’s stick with the default appearance. Refer to the image below for necessary modifications to align your popup with the content upgrade. The headline (No. 1) and subheading (No. 2) can be clicked to alter text and design. The preset (No. 3) should remain as email, while the call-to-action (No. 4) should be changed to “Submit Form” with appropriate copy.

Follow these recommended best practices for compelling popup copy selection. Configure popup visibility. Opt for “Manual Mode” to begin. For popups, choose “Show before a user leaves” and “if a visitor hasn’t seen the popup in 1 month”.

For welcome mats, select “Timed”, then “Show after 0 seconds” and “if a visitor hadn’t seen the popup in 1 month”. Compile a list of pages where you wish to exclude the popup’s appearance, such as checkout, thank you, and privacy policy pages.

Exclude these pages by adding rules under “Don’t show rules” for popup display time. Click “Add New Rule” ⇒ “URLs” to specify exclusions. Configure the post-email submission action. Choose between “Redirect URL” or “Download Content Upgrade” (available for paid accounts only). Connect to your email service and configure subscriber addition to your email list.

Click “Make Live” to activate the popup display on your website.
