Install Sumo in any site using GTM

Goal: Ensure Sumo is installed on your website via Google Tag Manager.

Ideal Outcome: Successfully integrate the Sumo plugin to enhance your site’s growth.

Prerequisites or requirements: Google Tag Manager must already be set up on your website. Importance: Sumo provides a suite of tools crucial for enhancing website growth and traffic. Utilizing Google Tag Manager for Sumo installation is recommended as it streamlines code management within a single tool.

Locations: Your website & Sumo.

Timing: Ideally completed yesterday. However, it can be done now as well. Installation is a one-time process, after which you can immediately benefit from its features.

Environment setup: Ensure Google Tag Manager is configured on your site and accessible.

Obtain a free Sumo account:

To begin Sumo installation, register for a free account by clicking here and following the registration process. Enter your website URL and email address, then choose a password. Upon registration, take note of the provided script, which will be manually installed in Google Tag Manager later.

Manual Installation of Sumo in Google Tag Manager:

Note: Direct integration between Sumo and GTM is currently unavailable. Follow these steps for manual installation. Open tagmanager.google.com in a new tab and select the appropriate ‘Container Name’ for your site. Navigate to ‘Tags’ then ‘New’ in the left sidebar. Rename the tag to something like “Sumo GTM integration” in Google. When creating new tags, establish a consistent naming convention for organizational purposes. Click the tag icon and select ‘HTML‘ tag type, then ‘Custom HTML’. Paste the Sumo script obtained during registration into the ‘Custom HTML’ field in GTM. Under ‘Triggering’, select ‘All Pages’, then save. Navigate to ‘Tags’ in the left sidebar, and click ‘Submit’. Provide a Version Name and Description if desired, then click ‘Submit’. Testing the Sumo tag’s functionality: Click ‘Preview’. Enter your website’s URL and click ‘Connect’. Check for successful connection confirmation. Use Google Tag Assistant to verify that the tag is firing on all pages.
