Installing the Facebook Pixel on Your Site

Goal:

Ensure the Facebook Pixel is installed correctly on your website.

Desired Outcome:

Flawless technical implementation of the Facebook Pixel.

Requirements:

  • Pre-existing Google Tag Manager installation on your site.
  • Established Facebook Ads Account through Business Manager.

Importance:

The Facebook Pixel is crucial for Facebook advertising. It allows you to create remarketing audiences and track campaign conversions.

Location:

Both Google Tag Manager and your Facebook Ads Manager.

Frequency:

One-time setup for initial Facebook Pixel installation.

Who Performs This: Website management, analytics, or paid advertising personnel.

Using Google Tag Manager (our recommended method for managing website tracking codes):

Preparation:

  1. Secure access to your company’s Facebook Business Manager account.
  2. Install the “Facebook Pixel Helper” Chrome extension.

Installation Steps:

  1. Log in to Facebook and access your Business Manager.
  2. Navigate to “All Tools” > “Events Manager” from the sidebar.
  3. Choose an existing pixel or create a new one:
    • Existing Pixel:
      1. Select the desired pixel and initiate “Continue Pixel Setup.”
      2. Choose “Meta Pixel” and click “Connect.” If unavailable, select “Facebook Pixel” instead.
      3. Opt for “Check for Partner” among the provided options.
      4. Select “Google Tag Manager” and proceed to Step 5.
    • New Pixel:
      1. Click on “Connect Data Sources” or “Connect Web.”
      2. Select “Web” and click “Connect.”
      3. Name your pixel and create it.
      4. Enter your website URL and confirm.
      5. Choose Google Tag Manager for integration:
        • Option A: If Google Tag Manager is pre-configured, it should be automatically selected. Click “Next.”
        • Option B: Deselect other integrations and click “Next.”
      6. Select only “Meta Pixel.”
      7. Choose “Check for Partner” when presented with installation methods.
      8. Select “Google Tag Manager” from the list.
  4. You’ll progress through a workflow to connect your Google Tag Manager account to Facebook. Click “Next” on the initial screen.
  5. Repeat clicking “Next” on subsequent screens.
  6. Decide whether to activate “Advanced Matching” (optional for advanced Google Tag Manager users). If not, leave it off and click “Next.”
  7. Sign in to the Google Account associated with your Google Tag Manager.
  8. Select the desired access level for FB Pixel installation (we recommend selecting all permissions) and click “Continue.”
  9. Verify account and container details before clicking “Finish Setup.”
  10. Skip the Event Setup Tool for now (focusing on Pixel Base Code installation) and click “Next.”
  11. A warning regarding missing events might appear (normal during initial installation). We’ll verify the setup later.
  12. A confirmation screen will indicate successful setup completion.

Verifying the Facebook Pixel:

  1. Open your website in Chrome.
  2. Click on the “Meta Pixel Helper” extension.
  3. The extension should detect at least one installed pixel matching the Pixel ID in your Meta Business Manager.
